Widespread Panic bassist Dave Schools talks “The Art Of The Setlist” on the latest installment of The JamBase Podcast. Episode 58 starts with a brief recap of live music news from JamBase’s Andy Kahn and a word about non-profit organization The Mockingbird Foundation.
Dave Schools spoke with JamBase’s Scott Bernstein backstage at The Beacon Theatre in New York City before the band’s second of five consecutive shows at the venue. The WSP co-founding member began by discussing how the sextet currently decides what songs they will play each night. Schools then recalled the previous methods the band used to formulate setlists.

The bassist went on to explain how the setlist is just a guide to a journey that changes from night-to-night and the differences between what Panic does and the Dead’s method of “setlisting.” Dave also detailed how past Halloween themes were picked and came together. Additionally, the Richmond native discussed the decision to start incorporating the late Michael Houser’s songs back into setlists — including “The Waker” — in the years and decades following the band’s namesake’s death. Finally, Schools previewed Widespread Panic’s upcoming studio sessions with longtime producer John Keane.
