JamBase’s Andy Kahn chatted with Simon Allen at this year’s High Sierra Music Festival. Both JamBase and The New Mastersounds are celebrating 20th anniversaries in 2019, so the discussion began by looking back two decades ago to the earliest shows The New Mastersounds played in Leeds, England.
Simon recalls early on showing up to play a gig that turned out to be more of a living wake rather than a rock concert. Allen also revisits the band’s early days performing at their regular gig called the Cooker, singling out one incident when a rowdy (and raunchy) bachelorette party almost took over the stage at the club. Simon tells Andy about one of the band’s initial run of shows in the United States that included playing to an empty room (after the few in the audience were brought onstage) in Bellingham, Washington. The interview also touches on how guitarist Eddie Roberts structures setlists, the recent addition of guest vocalist Lamar Williams Jr. and more.
The episode begins with “The Rundown” co-hosted by AK and JamBase’s Scott Bernstein. The pair give a rundown of recent fall tour announcements from and . ScottyB also reports on the announcement Phish made about their upcoming shows at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park and the recent cases of plague in prairie dog colonies in the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge. “The Rundown” ends with the message shared by Osiris podcaster Jon Gutwillig of Touchdowns All Day With Jon Barber about his band . The note hinted at big things coming from Bisco, who confirmed their New Year’s Eve Run 2019/2020 this week.
